Family FunSpot: Playing Card Backpack Tags

Playing Card Backpack Tags
8/25/21

With school just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to get creative with backpack tags. Collages from found materials are inexpensive and when you use other crafting supplies to complete your designs, you’ll have an ID tag that’s as unique as your child.

Materials

You will need:

  • Vertical, Ziploc plastic badge protectors (https://bit.ly/36jQtg4)
  • Waxed playing cards
  • Fine grade sandpaper
  • Gesso—or white acrylic paint
  • Collage papers, magazines, scrapbook paper
  • Watercolor or acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Mod Podge (Michaels) or Yes Paste (Amazon)
  • Split Key Rings
  • 5” Nickel Beaded Keychain (https://bit.ly/30Lejyb)

Instructions:

Provide a playing card to each child doing the activities

Lightly sand both sides of it

Paint a thin layer of Gesso or white acrylic paint on each side of the card

Let the cards dry overnight

Let the kids begin to paint, collage, and design their tag

Let tags dry thoroughly (you can use a handheld hair dryer to speed the process)

Slide each newly designed playing card inside a badge holder and zip closed

Put the split ring through the punch hole on the badge holder

Use the beaded keychain through the slip ring

Attach the badge to the zipper pull (or elsewhere) on the backpack with the beaded keychain
