Family FunSpot: Handheld Hoops Craft

Handheld Hoops Craft
3/24/22

In order to celebrate March Madness, we’re creating a cool handheld game that your kiddos can take wherever they go. The biggest challenge might be finding the orange ping pong balls. We found ours on Amazon. The rest should be pretty easy to source, but is the game easy? You’ll have to make one to find out!

Materials

Materials:

  • White plastic cups (3-ounce size)
  • Black and silver medium point Sharpie markers
  • Orange ping pong balls
  • Orange acrylic craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Chopsticks
  • Scissors
  • Xacto blade
  • String
  • Hot melt glue gun
  • Low temp glue sticks

Instructions:

Plugin hot melt gun

Puncture a small hole with Xacto in the bottom of the white cup

Paint the rim of the white cup orange and let dry

Create a net pattern on the cup with the silver marker—crosshatching diagonally

Draw basketball lines on the ping pong ball with the black Sharpie and let dry

Cut an inch off one skewer

Make a hole with the Xacto midway in the side of the cup (should be slightly smaller than the chopstick)

Insert the wooden skewer into the cup—making sure it fits snugly—secure with a dollop of hot melt glue

Cut a piece of string about 15” long

Thread through a 3” heavy-duty darning needle with the string and thread through the bottom of the cup—knot it and pull the thread through the other end

Score a hole with a Xacto blade on opposite sides of the ping pong ball

Thread the string through the ping pong ball and then knot it at the end

Take turns trying to swing the ball upward and into the “basket!”
